Ian moved to New Zealand in 2013 and became a regular attendee at Queenstown Dharma Centre (QDC) later that year. He received teachings from and went on retreats with the Principal Teachers at QDC, Lama Mark Webber (Lama Yongdu Chokyi Gyaltsen), Tarchin Hearn, and Amnyi Trulchung Rinpoche, as well as other visiting teachers. In 2015, Ian became a trustee of the trust that operates QDC, and has chaired that board since 2021.
Ian has also regularly attended retreats with Jakob Leschly in NZ. Following one of these, he was asked to help organize Rinpoche’s 2023 event in Wānaka, which he did. Through attending this event, Ian became a student of Rinpoche’s and, with Rinpoche’s approval, became a trustee of SINZ during Rinpoche’s second Wānaka event in 2025.
After retiring from a career as a geophysicist in 2019, Ian opened a retreat centre near Queenstown with a friend. Maintaining this, along with hiking, skiing and kayaking, keeps Ian busy.
