Sadhana in Vajrayana

21 May 2024

Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche

A sadhana is a tantric spiritual practice which involves actualizing oneself as a deity. Sadhanas all have the same basic components: refuge, bodhicitta, accumulation of merit and wisdom, and confession. In the main part of the sadhana, we visualise ourselves as the deity, and at the end we dissolve the deity and stay in dharmakaya for as long as we can before rising again as the deity. The deity is the union of emptiness and luminosity and is everything and nothing at the same time. In other words, deity is non-duality. Sadhana is an elaborated method whose goal is to help practitioners to reach the non-elaborated truth.
