– The Nyingma Approach to Valid Cognition –
Jamgon Mipham’s classic with commentary by Khenchen Pema Sherab

Presented by Jakob Leschly

Every Wednesday, 7.30-8.30 pm AEDT (UTC + 11)

O monks, just as a goldsmith tests gold by rubbing, burning, and cutting before buying it, so too, you should examine my words before accepting them, and not just out of respect for me.” The Buddha in the Sutra of Dense Array

“The great scholar and advanced spiritual master Jamgon Mipham’s Sword of Wisdom is a classic work that explicates valid cognition. I am happy to see it now available in English with commentary and scholarly appendices that will be very helpful for serious students in understanding this profound and important text.” His Holiness the Sakya Trichen

The Buddhist teaching on what is valid knowledge, pramana, welcomes critical thinking as essential to gaining genuine and deep faith in the Dharma. Mipham’s Sword of Wisdom is a profound yet clear introduction to understanding and experientially integrating a valid knowledge of relative and ultimate reality on the Mahayana and Vajrayana paths. Jakob presents the material in an accessible way, pointing to its relevance in our assertions of what is and isn’t valid knowledge.

 About the Authors

Jamgön Mipham Rinpoche (1846-1912) was an exceptional master who greatly influenced the modern study of the Sutra and Mantra teachings in both the Nyingma and Kagyü schools of Tibetan Buddhism. A student of Jamgön Kongtrul, Jamyang Khyentsé Wangpo, and Patrul Rinpoche, Mipham Rinpoche was blessed by Manjushri at an early age and swiftly came to master all branches of Buddhist and secular learning. Like the Omniscient Longchenpa, his writings are said to have arisen from the expanse of wisdom and offer a clear vision of the united intent of all the Buddha’s teachings.

Khenpo Palden Sherab (1938-2010) was born in Eastern Tibet, became highly respected as a scholar, and was a key figure in preserving the Nyingma teaching in India in the 1960s. In the 1980s, at the request of his teacher, Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche, Khenpo Palden Sherab moved to the United States, where he founded and taught at the Padmasambhava Buddhist Centre in upstate New York.
