A Feast of Awakening with SI Europe

On this day, we will perform a Mandala Offering based on the short text by Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo, thus supporting the most energetic and hopeful ancient Eastern Slavic carnival—Butter Week, or Maslenitsa, the festival of awakening, the festival of renewal, that joyful side of impermanence!

The Mandala Offering is a practice that contributes to the accumulation of merit, the purification of attachment, and the development of the paramita of generosity. Mandalas exist in various forms: they are drawn, embroidered, created with coloured sand and other materials, and even sculpted. During our virtual gathering, we will share the history and traditions of Russian Maslenitsa and engage in the creation and brief offering of a (pancake) mandala.

Pancakes are an essential attribute of Maslenitsa celebrations—they were made in abundance, shared with others, and given away. This tradition has always taken place under the vast skies of early spring—skies that, to paraphrase Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, quite literally come crashing down on our heads like a blue pancake: “If a giant pancake falls on our heads, it falls on everyone’s heads.” The sky overturned upon us is a symbol of liberation from habitual mental conditioning and a step beyond duality.

We invite you to participate online, so please have at hand either some pancakes cooked following any recipe of your choosing, or any other round bread or pastry (pita, lavash, round waffles, etc., will do just fine).
