Discussions of guru devotion usually focus on how a student should behave towards the guru, but not how the guru should treat students. According to Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, the responsibility of the guru is far greater. Once a guru has taken a student, they have full responsibility for them, so it is just as important for a guru to analyse their students as it is for the students to analyse a potential guru. A Vajrayana master must have the utmost respect and compassion for their students as sentient beings who are seeking liberation who, on the most fundamental level, possess buddhanature.
