このお経の主人公は、真実を求めて巡礼の旅に出た裕福な商人であるスダナです。彼は旅の途中で、50人以上の素晴らしい師に出会います。彼らは皆、子供や売春婦など、さまざまな方法で姿を現します。スダナは、菩薩の道を実践するためには、従来の世界観という狭く限定された見方を手放し、無限の、あるいは大乗の見方に対して心を開かなければならないことを学びます。
このお経は単なる仏教のお話ではなく、私たちを取り巻く世界に対する限られた見方と、私たちが現実だと思っていることを解体するものです。最後の師はサマンタバドラ（普賢菩薩）で、経典は彼の行願（普賢行）で締めくくられます。
