James Gritz is an accomplished photographer, author, and filmmaker whose work has been widely published and exhibited in Europe, Mexico, and the United States. His photography is represented by renowned agencies such as Getty Images, Robert Harding, and Glasshouse Images. With over 45 years of experience, James has traveled extensively, capturing the essence of diverse cultures in India, Nepal, Ladakh, Tibet, Bhutan, Cambodia, Africa, Mexico, and Europe. His compelling images have graced the pages of Outside Magazine, National Geographic Online, Lion’s Roar, New Age Journal, Shambhala Sun, Worth, Audubon, and many others.
In 2005, James spent five months in eastern Tibet (Nangchen) with Tsoknyi Rinpoche on a project to raise funds for the Nangchen Nuns. He worked as the still photographer alongside a film crew led by Victress Hitchcock, culminating in the film “Blessings” and several photo exhibitions. He hopes to publish a book on the Khampa people someday.
James also served as the official photographer for the 17th Karmapa’s first American and European tours. He co-directed Never Give Up, a documentary film on the 17th Karmapa, Orgyen Trinley Dorje, with Fernanda Rivero. Shot in India during the Kagyu Monlam, the film captures the rich spiritual traditions of Tibetan Buddhism and the inspiring leadership of the 17th Karmapa. An interview from the film with Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche is available on James Gritz’s YouTube channel, titled “Compassion and Aspiration”.
In addition to his filmmaking and photography, James is the author of Pith Instructions from My Teachers (Sumeru Press, 2024 – foreword by Jigme Khyentse Rinpoche). He is currently working on three new books: Short Moments, Many Times: A Path to Compassion and Awareness, Footsteps of the Buddha: Buddhist Pilgrimage in India, and Zen and the Art of Street Photography. His creative endeavors extend to leading street and travel photography workshops in Mexico, Europe, and the United States, where he shares his expertise with aspiring photographers and offers teachings on creating images with open awareness.
James’s journey into Tibetan Buddhism began in 1973 under the guidance of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche. He has continued his spiritual path under authentic lineage holders, including Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche and Jigme Khyentse Rinpoche. This spiritual journey has profoundly influenced his artistic vision, infusing his work with depth and mindfulness. Beyond his artistic and spiritual pursuits, James’s work reflects his lifelong commitment to exploring the intersection of art, culture, and spirituality.
